Punjab Honahar Merit Scholarship Program has been launched

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has given the green flag to the Honahar Merit Scholarship Program which has significantly increased opportunities for students across the province. Under his direction, the number of scholarships will increase from 4,000 to 25,000. 

At a special meeting of the Higher Education Department, Chief Minister Maryam announced that the scholarship will cover all tuition fees for BS degree students in government and selected private universities. He emphasized the role of the private sector in improving access to higher education, noting its potential to benefit young people in remote areas.

Furthermore, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz ordered the immediate establishment of new universities in Jhelum, Wahari and Bahawalnagar.He also endorsed proposals for new universities under public-private partnership, aimed at facilitating private sector collaboration in the sector. Moreover, he initiated the plan to launch the laptop scheme without any delay.

In an effort to raise educational standards, the chief minister ordered the introduction of market-based discipline in junior colleges and pushed for a transparent merit-based online appointment system for divisional directors and principals.The proposal to provide new buses to government colleges was also discussed.

Recognizing the importance of monitoring, Chief Minister Maryam proposed setting up a high-level ministerial committee to monitor the operations of private universities.He also announced the plan to set up the Punjab Board Coordination Commission to streamline the affairs of the education board.

Expressing satisfaction over the successful implementation of MD CAT and E CAT free classes in 90 colleges, Chief Minister Maryam called for gradual expansion of these classes to benefit students from remote areas. He appreciated the efforts of Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat and the Higher Education Department. 

The meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif was attended by Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb and Secretary Higher Education Dr. Farrukh Naveed and other high officials who provided detailed briefings and recommendations.

Eligibility Criteria for the Honahar Merit Scholarship

The Honahar Merit Scholarship Program is accessible to students from government and certain private institutions of Punjab. According to Ms. Maryam Nawaz, students from government institutions are automatically eligible, while students from eight designated private universities can apply on the basis of merit. 

This program is only for students residing in Punjab. Applicants from other provinces are not eligible. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must complete a B.Sc. degree and demonstrate exceptional academic performance.

Development of New Universities in Punjab

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced the plan to establish new universities in Punjab. These new institutions will be established in eight districts starting from Jhelum, Vihari and Bahawalnagar. The aim of this project is to increase access to higher education across the province.
